Men’s Fishing Trip Print E-mail
Our 20th Annual Men’s Fishing Trip for 2008 was the biggest and best one yet.

This year, for the first time, the number of men attending actually exceeded the capacity of the Pine Bay cabins. Our gracious host, Tom Megan, “bent the rules” to allow us to bring a camper onto the site, and additional lodging was procured at the Bonnie Castle Inn in Alexandria Bay. The weather was gray and damp but mild for most of our stay, which was good for fishing.

This year’s fishing prize went to Steve Horswell for a 22 ½” Northern Pike. It should be noted that Steve was using Jeremy James’ boat, rod, tackle, and bait when he caught it. If only Jeremy could fish like that!

As usual, fishing was only part of the entertainment and enjoyment. Carl Murphy made numerous improvements to his “spud gun” (potato launcher) since its debut two years ago. It is now powered by a precisely regulated compressed air charge (instead of the somewhat temperamental flammable hair spray). And the range of usable ammunition has expanded beyond potatoes and turnips to include cylindrical PVC projectiles, which would float on the water and even glowed in the dark. After they were all launched, Mike Seelig and George James were tasked with operating the retrieval boat to rescue them from the river. No doubt, George will be spending spare minutes from now on designing tiny boat motors with homing devices to fit the missiles for next year.

July Winners’ Club Print E-mail
The castle walls came tumbling down as we prepared to undergo construction on our new Olympic Stadium.
As the Winners’ Club staff focused on the “Olympic/Teamwork” theme, they worked together in setting the stage to hold their own Olympics in the NLA Chapel.

In July, they learned that there is a lot of training and exercise that needs to take place when a person is going to be in the Olympics. The one main goal that every athlete has is to start and complete his or her race. Having a goal and staying on course to meet that goal may be hard and tiresome at times, but crossing the finish line is worth it.

The games included Thread the Needle, Team Building Relay Race and Obstacle Course, and we can’t forget to mention the Water Balloon Toss. The one muscle that got a huge workout was the stomach muscle, because they had laughed so hard while rooting for their teammates to finish each race.

Youth Camp 2008 Print E-mail

As always, this year's Youth Camp was awesome! It was uplifting to fellowship with the youth of New York and to hear the testimonies of how God is working in their lives. The anointed preaching of Brother Staten and Brother Mooney was an extremely powerful and moving experience that blessed us all immensely. Every young person was strengthened and greatly ministered to in each service. Of course, no district youth event would really be a youth event without the prevalence of sports. So naturally, there were basketball and dodge ball tournaments, soccer games, baseball games, and other various sport-like activities that consumed a large portion of the young people’s time.

Congratulations to the staff who thoroughly dominated the campers in both the basketball and softball games. This year’s camp truly was a phenomenal time with the NY district youth and the Lord.

Chicken BBQ Print E-mail
What happens when two months of planning by a committee led by Tim Davin and a one-day effort by the vast majority of the church culminate? At NLA, you get the 2008 Chicken Bar-B-Que! It is rumored that NLA puts on the largest BBQ in Henrietta. The only way that something of this magnitude could be pulled off so successfully year after year is by leadership with vision and submission to God, the willingness of the church to work, submission to that leadership, and most importantly, the blessing of God on the effort put forth.

There is no way to know on this side of heaven the effect of the BBQ on the lives of those who come in contact with the church, but we can say with surety that this event allows many of Henrietta’s residents a glimpse of the body of Christ working in harmony to serve this community.
